Body discovered at Havre’s Woods likely died by suicide, police said

- Wendy DiAlesandro

A woman walking in Ravenna’s Havre’s Woods Park on Thursday morning came upon a body and a gun by the side of the trail and called police.

Ravenna police, assisted by the county coroner and Bureau of Criminal Investigations, identified the victim as a 72-year-old Ravenna man. Investigators are treating the matter as a suicide, Ravenna Police Captain Jake Smallfield said.

Police entered the victim’s residence, where they found the box the gun came in and a box of ammunition with two rounds missing. Both rounds were in the gun near the man’s body, and one of the rounds was spent, Smallfield said.

Police located a brother who is not in the area. They learned that the man was a veteran of the armed forces and had recently suffered a loss when his girlfriend passed away, Smallfield said.

The coroner and BCI will continue to investigate the death.
