Atwater, Mantua townships approve recycling fee increase

- Wendy DiAlesandro ,

If you live in Atwater or Mantua townships, you’ll be paying a bit more for recycling: $5.50 per household per month, up from the $3.75 monthly fee residents have been paying for biweekly service.

The rate hike is retroactive to July 1 and has been approved by township trustees, said Dawn Collins, acting director of the Portage County Solid Waste Management District.

Collins’ goal for the new year is to standardize contracts throughout the county so all communities are receiving biweekly service for $5.50. The national average for recycling is $7, she said.

The recycling center had been planning to raise recycling rates in 2019 and had even scheduled public hearings, but “Covid got in the way,” Collins said.

Around Randolph: Waterloo agriculture students excited for the future of farming

Nov. 9-15 was Ohio Soil Health Week, and throughout Ohio there were events to honor the soil. Surprisingly, within a spoonful of soil there are more living organisms than there are people currently on this planet. As we enter this season of delicious festivities, may we be grateful to the farmers and soil microbes which make our food nutritious and tasty.
