Around Garrettsville: ‘Phantom of the Opera’ is coming to town

The Garrettsville Curtains up Theatre announced that for its 20th anniversary in January 2026, it will do a production of “Phantom of the Opera.” This is the non-musical adaptation from the book. Watch for more information on auditions.

The second annual Zach Peterson Memorial Scholarship Bike, Car and Tractor Show will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1 at Nelson Ledges Racecourse. Gates open at 10:30 a.m. for registration. There will be music, raffles, BBQ and more. All proceeds are used for scholarships in Zach’s name for students from both James A. The Nelson Garrettsville Community Food Cupboard is hosting its annual Murder Mystery at Sugar Bush at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. “The Murder at the Slurp n Burp Oktoberfest” is a fundraiser for the food cupboard, with the murder mystery performed by Curtains up Theatre. Tickets go on sale in September and may be purchased at the YMCA and The Village Emporium. More information to follow on all the yummy Oktoberfest foods being served.

The Garrettsville Branch of the Portage County District Library is having some fun activities in August. From 11 a.m. to noon Friday, Aug. 15, the library is holding an Arthritis Exercise Class for seniors struggling with the effects of chronic pain from arthritis. Contact the library to register to learn how to exercise with arthritis. Limited to 10 participants.
For teens, there is Board Game Club from 4 to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, where fun new board games are played every month. Limited to 10 participants.
