Around Garrettsville: Holiday events and a new children's book set in Garrettsville
- Jackie Loreta-Rinearson
The Garrettsville Branch of the Portage County District Library is sponsoring a performance of “Butternut Hill” to celebrate the holiday season. Come enjoy Appalachian and Celtic music performed through various unique instruments such as the mandolin and hammered dulcimer, to name a few. Enjoy the sounds of the season at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. The library is located at 10482 South St., Garrettsville.
As part of its 20th anniversary celebration, the Garrettsville Curtains up Theatre is preparing for its production of “The Phantom of the Opera” (non-musical version). The production is written by Gene Traylor, with permission from Dramatic Publishing. This production is sponsored by Ryser Insurance; Jeff Rinearson Health Insurance; Kelly Zander, Realtor, Middlefield; Carter Lumber; and Sarchione Chevrolet - Paul McEwuen. Show times and dates are 7 p.m. Jan. 16, 17, 23 and 24, and 1 p.m. Jan. 18. Tickets are available at the door and cost $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children. Ticket prices are the same as 2006.
In addition to its 20th anniversary celebration, Curtains up Theatre is stepping into a new endeavor in 2026 as it works with the State of Ohio and State Representative Heidi Workman to begin a new venture with the theater. Once funding is confirmed, a theater fundraiser will begin.
The St. Ambrose Knights of Columbus will host Breakfast with Santa at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 at the church hall.
Garrettsville makes its debut in a children’s book called “Cambree’s Adventure on the Mysterious Path.” “Cambree’s Adventure” books are available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Nook, Kindle and 50 other platforms. Author Jacquelyn Loreta-Rinearson turned their summer RV trips into adventures for her dog, Cambree. Each book will take on a new adventure in a new location.
Geography is brought into a learning environment via the map on the back cover showing the location of Cambree’s adventure. Watch for the book signing (yes, Cambree will be there, too) at The Village Bookstore on Main Street in Garrettsville. Follow Cambree on her own Facebook page, Cambree’s Adventures.
