Op-ed: Reed Memorial asks for "yes" to renew

- Op-Ed Contributor

Opinion of the Reed Memorial Library – Community Starts Here Political Action Committee Leslie Thomas, Treasurer

The Reed Memorial Library Community Starts Here Political Action Committee is asking for a “YES” Vote on the May 5th, 2026, renewal ballot Issue 4 for Reed Memorial Library.

The Reed Memorial Library Board of Trustees has decided to place a renewal levy on the May 2026 General Election Ballot. The State of Ohio's latest budget drastically cut funding for Ohio's libraries. With these cuts, it is imperative that the Reed Memorial Library renewal levy passes so the library can continue to provide the same level of services, resources and programming to our community. These services include material loans, research and media resources, digital resources, free notary services, Internet and printing access and free summer lunches for children through a partnership with the Community Action Council. The library also strives to find new ways to be a useful resource for our community.

The funds provided from the levy issue provide 42% of the library’s operating budget. The levy is a renewal levy which means that no new taxes will be incurred by our community. The existing levy costs about $28 per year for each $100,000 of home value.

The Reed Memorial Library – Community Starts Here Political Action Committee urges community members to thoughtfully consider supporting the ballot issue which is critical to continuing the financial support of the Reed Memorial Library. The library is a vital resource for our community, and it needs community support to continue its current funding.

Please vote “YES” to show your support of the library on May 5th, 2026.

Round Two: Notes on notes

- by Tom Hardesty. - One constant of my 40 years in journalism is that each day has been a new adventure. Or, many times, a misadventure. Things I didn’t expect to happen, things I never dreamed could happen, things I’ll never forget whether I want to or not.

Rooted Ramblings: So many plants, so little time

- by Master Gardener Volunteers. - I love spring! There’s that fresh fragrance in the air. The beautiful early flowers and the new bird songs added to our winter bird songs. But best of all are the plant sales! Nurseries, greenhouses, home stores, garden clubs, master gardeners, plant swaps, and even your neighbor down the street.
