Kent water rates will increase by 9% in 2023, then 3% annually

Kent City Council on Wednesday approved a 9% increase in water and sewer rates, effective the first billing cycle in 2023.

Council Member Tracy Wallach cast the only no vote.

Council also approved automatic 3% water and sewer rate hikes in subsequent years, and reserved to itself the right to review the rates as needed.

Residents who believe they qualify for assistance in order to pay for the utilities should contact the City of Kent 330-678-8104. Eligibility for 20% discounts on both sewer and water is as follows:

  • Hold a Golden Buckeye Card or proof acceptable to the city that they are at least 62 years old
  • Live in the structure to which the utilities are being billed
  • Are the person to whom bills for the utility services are being addressed
  • Provide proof of a $27,950 adjusted gross income if single, widowed, legally separated, or divorced; or a combined adjusted gross income of $31,950 if married
  • Have some disability that impedes steady employment or is certified as permanently and totally disabled
