Data center open house scheduled during Shalersville moratorium

- Staff Report

A cryptocurrency mining company wants to build a massive data center complex near the Geis property in Shalersville. An open house at 3 p.m. today invites the public to learn more.

Portage County commissioners and State Rep. Heidi Workman will be in attendance at an open house about the proposed data center from noon to 3 p.m. today.

The open house is organized by a group called Team NEO at 9575 Route 44, Mantua — the location of Geis Development's 1 million-square-foot Turnpike Commerce Center building in Shalersville.

While the event's poster appears to be intentionally vague, the group's project website includes plans for a 14-acre data center complex. Images from the project website include the name of cryptocurrency miner Bitdeer Technologies Group, according to the Kent Environmental council.

The sparse details of the center are published at www.neohioprojectinfo.com

Shalersville Township trustees will discuss the data center at their own meeting set for 5:30 p.m. June 16 at the township hall, 9090 Route 44. The developers have also been invited.

Shalersville has a moratorium on data centers in place until November, and is working with legal counsel to make the moratorium permanent.

Documenters: Kent City Council meeting for May 20, 2026

- by Noell Wolfgram Evans. - Shaffer Bish had the only new business. A resident contacted her regarding a beer-pong table that has become what she called “a fixture” in her neighbor’s yard. Shaffer Bish asked council to take up the item as a potential code issue in a future committee meeting. All members voted yes to move this concern forward.
