County roundup: Overnight fire staff in Atwater, plus news from Suffield, Mogadore and Randolph

Atwater

Atwater Township trustees passed a motion to continue moving forward with the overnight staffing at the Atwater Fire Department with no more than two dual-certified members. They will receive a $50 stipend and normal response/transport pay as warranted.


A resolution passed to continue the fire department’s dispatch services agreement between the Atwater Township Board of Trustees and the Portage County Sheriff’s Office.


The township received NOPEC grant awards in the amounts of $1,000 for the Community Sponsorship Program and $3,780 for the 2025 NOPEC NEC grant.


Below are the February dates and times for township meetings (all meetings are at 1219 State Route 183 and are open to the public):

  • Zoning Commission, Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Memorial Day Parade Planning, Thursday, Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. (Kinsey’s)
  • Employee Handbook Review/Revise, Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 6 p.m.
  • Records Retention, Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Trustees Meeting, Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.

A reminder that all meetings are posted and updated if needed on the township website’s calendar (atwatertwp.net).

Suffield

The Suffield League’s annual “Laugh at the Lake” will be Feb. 22 at St. Nicholas Church at the corner of County Line Road and State Route 224. Doors open at 6 p.m. Three comedians will perform with Jeff Blanchard as the featured comic. Dinner will be served, and there will be a cash bar. There will be a silent auction, a Chinese auction and door prizes. Tickets are $55.


Township chair Jeff Eldreth, along with vice chair Jared Phillip, trustee Tom Calcei and fiscal officer Lori Calcei, recently attended the Ohio Township Association Conference in Columbus.

“It’s educational classes and a trade show,” Eldreth said. “All aspects of township government are covered. For instance, if you’re looking to buy an ambulance, a fire truck, equipment for your road department, if you’re looking to chip-and-seal and pave plus playground equipment.”


Suffield Secure Storage recently opened at 68 Waterloo Rd. just east of Dollar General.

Mogadore

The Mogadore Historical Society will have its first Soup and Sandwich fundraiser luncheon of the year from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12 at the Russell M. Pry Community Center at 3857 Mogadore Rd.

Randolph

Old School Park is closed for the winter because of drivers doing donuts in the parking lot and driving on the ballfields.

Nov. 9-15 was Ohio Soil Health Week, and throughout Ohio there were events to honor the soil. Surprisingly, within a spoonful of soil there are more living organisms than there are people currently on this planet. As we enter this season of delicious festivities, may we be grateful to the farmers and soil microbes which make our food nutritious and tasty.

Atwater The Atwater Fire Department was an integral part of the “active shooter drill” that took place Oct. 31 at Waterloo Local Schools. Various departments and agencies were involved with this training/learning exercise. Meanwhile, Jacob Shaffer was recently hired by the fire department.
