Village of Windham
Streets in the village of Windham that will be resurfaced this summer are: Cloverleaf Road, Greenmeadow Road, Wilverne Spur, Maple Circle, Wilverne Circle and Oak Circle. Geauga Paving will do the project, which will begin at the end of July and will be completed in mid-August. A grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission will fund a portion of the job.
Big Daddy’s Smoke Shop opened its doors at 8922 E. Center St. on June 29. The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.
Brandon Nutter has been hired as the village’s new village administrator. He started his new position on June 29.
The local Hope Town: A Recovery Ecosystem had a Grill and Recover free community event on June 27.
“They bought our old administration building on East Center Street and remodeled it,” Mayor Terrie Altiere said.
Freedom
Freedom Township accepted bids for the Hewins Road project. This project is part of a 50% grant and loan with the Ohio Public Works Commission. The award for this contract is with Ronyak Paving.
The township trustees also accepted bids for this year’s chip and seal projects; Melway Paving won that bid. The roads that will be chipped and sealed are King Road, Goodell Road, Hankee
Road and Wygle Road with Shalersville Township.
Both of these road projects should be completed by the end of September.
The Freedom Community Park Boosters will be hosting the Annual Fall Festival and Car Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Village of Hiram
The village of Hiram will join the America 250 reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8 at the Historical Society Century House in Village Park at 11617 Garfield Rd. All across the country, communities will gather at 6 p.m. this Wednesday for a simultaneous reading. A selection of representatives from the village and Hiram township will be presenting.
“We encourage the community to come out and support the reading,” Mayor Anne Haynam said.
“Heats in Hiram,” a short-track mountain bike series, will take place on Tuesdays Aug. 4, Aug. 11 and Aug. 18 at 6969 Constance Ave. The races, which will be from a mile-and-a-half to two miles on a dirt-track path, will last approximately 20 minutes. “It will be fun, competitive and a social environment for everybody,” Haynam said.
The village’s “Music in the Park” series will continue from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, at Hadsell Park on Bancroft Street. Performing will be the Michigan band North Ingalls.
Garrettsville
The 14th Annual G-Men Football 4-Person Golf Scramble Fundraiser will be on Friday, July 31, at Sugarbush Golf Course at 11186 state Route 88 in Garrettsville. Shotgun start at 8 a.m.
Participating in the 18-hole scramble will cost $100 per person and $400 per team (includes three drink tickets per person). No outside alcoholic beverages. $400 cash prize for lowest score.

Village of Mantua
Stop by the Portage County District Library’s Bookmobile from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays July 8, July 15 and July 22 at Buchert Park at 4810 E. High St. in the Village of Mantua. The
Bookmobile is a traveling library, bringing the joy of reading and more right to your neighborhood. Best of all, it’s completely free – you can enjoy the library wherever you are.

Mantua Township
The next fundraising dinner for the Mantua Restoration Society will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 10, at the Mantua Center School Gym at 11741 Mantua Center Rd. in Mantua Township. Dine-in or carry-out. No charge, but donations accepted. Please consider giving what you’d pay for a comparable meal at a restaurant, plus tip. A variety of entrées provided, including one supplied each month from Main Street on the River. Several salads and a variety of desserts, including homemade pies. All food is home cooked and donated by the MaRSI members: soups to casseroles to cornbread to salads and desserts. Light piano music provided by Steve Stork. Note: this is not a free community meal, but rather a fundraiser for the society, which helps provide funds for the restoration and upkeep of Mantua Center’s historic buildings and sites.
