Garrettsville

The Garrettsville time-capsule opening will be Saturday, July 6 on High Street. It will be presented by the James A. Garfield Historical Society. Historical tours, including the Masonic Lodge, will kick off the event at 9 a.m. The Great Reveal of the 100-year-old time capsule will begin at noon. Other events will include the Great Gathering of the Beards contest, special historical displays, antique vehicles and piano music from the decades. The 12th annual G-Men Football Four-Person Golf Scramble fundraiser will be Friday, July 26 at Sugar Bush Golf Course at 11186 state Rte. 88. It will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The fees are $100 per person and $400 per team (includes three drink tickets per person). Please NO outside alcoholic beverages. There will be a $400 cash prize for the lowest score. Village council approved a resolution banning residents from parking their cars on their front lawns.

“There have been complaints about people using their front lawns as parking lots, which does not look very appealing,” Mayor Rick Patrick said.
Violations will be handled by the village’s zoning inspector.


Village council made a resolution to recognize Michelle Stuck, who recently stepped down as the Garrettsville solicitor. Stuck held her position for 15 years. Her replacement is Bill Mason.

Village of Mantua

The Village of Mantua’s annual community-wide garage sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20. It is sponsored by the Mantua-Shalersville Area Chamber of Commerce. It is open to any residents in the Village of Mantua, Mantua Township and Shalersville Township.

“We’re going to compile a list of participants and will hand them out to people and publicize it,” Chamber President Randy Ellis said. “Hopefully, we’ll have a whole lot of people in town shopping, so it’s a good time to unload your stuff.”

The annual Portage Parks Headwaters Adventure Race will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 29 at Buchert Park. It is a run, bike and paddle kind of race. You can run solo or as a team. The Mantua Farmers Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 13 at Christ Lutheran Church at 10827 N. Main St.


Another farmers and makers market will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. June 28 and July 12 at the Granary Building at 4690 E. Prospect St. This farmers and makers market will be held the second and fourth Fridays of the month through August.


The annual “Art on the Hill” will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 13 on East Prospect Street. It is a craft and wine-tasting event.

Mantua Township

The 60th annual Mantua Township Ox Roast Fair will start at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 19 and go all day Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The church is located at 11045 St. Joseph Blvd. just off Pioneer Trail. Bring money for sandwiches and other fair-type food. There will be carnival rides, games, a tractor pull and a semi-truck pull.


The Mantua Township Service Department is busy repairing culverts, mowing the roadsides, taking care of the ballparks, ditching and fixing the township’s road signs. The service department can be reached at (330) 274-8568.


The Mantua Township Trustees will be opening bids for the Ohio Public Works Commission Pioneer Trail Resurfacing Project on Thursday, June 27 at Mantua Township Town Hall, located at 4196 Twinsburg Warren Rd. The winning bid will be announced at the end of the bid-opening meeting.


The township salt shed is scheduled for major repairs in July, including a new roof and siding as well as electrical upgrades. It is expected to take three to five days to complete the project.


The regular township trustees meeting for July has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, July 11. The normally scheduled meeting fell on July 4 this year.

Village of Windham

The Village of Windham’s “Fun in the Sun” festival will make its return after several years off at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20 at Windham Village Park, located at 1-99 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. The event will feature fireworks, a rib cook-off, food trucks, carnival games, craft vendors, a beer tent, music and face painting. There will also be a petting zoo at 2 p.m., a car show from 2 to 4 p.m., and a hot dog eating contest at 3 p.m. outside the maintenance garage in which the winner will pocket $50 and a Hot Dog Champion T-shirt. In addition, the Texas Hold ’em Tournament will start at 4 p.m. in the maintenance garage in which there will be a $50 buy-in; re-buys and add-ons will be available. Cash games will start at 2 p.m. The rib-cookoff contest will start at 5 p.m. outside the maintenance garage, while the fireworks show starts at dusk. Windham Township

The Windham Township Trustees will meet with the Portage County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) on Monday, July 8 regarding how to disperse the funds given to the village from the Disaster Relief Fund set up by the EMA.

Village of Hiram

The Village of Hiram’s annual fireworks show will take place Wednesday, July 3 at Hiram College’s Charles A. Henry Field at Malmisur Stadium. Food trucks will be available. The next day, the annual parade will start at noon at the post office at 11676 Hayden St. and will go around the block. Events that day on the Gerstacker at the college will start at 9 a.m. with an old-fashioned baseball game. Bike decorating for kids will be at 10:30 a.m. There will also be a bike rodeo for kids, a community potluck, kids games, a pie contest (adult and kids divisions) and an ice cream social with the Garrettsville band the Garritones playing.


During Hiram College’s Alumni Weekend June 14-16, Charlie Goodyear was in town to speak as part of the James A. Garfield Trail events. Hiram is one of four towns on the Garfield Trail, and events over the weekend were held at each of the four sites. Garfield, the 20th president of the United States and the second U.S. president to be assassinated, graduated from Hiram College, served as its president and met his future wife there. On June 15, Goodyear, who authored a book about Garfield, spoke to a standing-room-only crowd in the Kennedy Center Ballroom. The other towns on the Trail were Moreland Hills, where Garfield was born; Mentor; and Fairview, where he is buried.


Hiram Village Council had its first reading of formally recognizing the Hiram Historical Society as the official historical society of the village.

“I think it will eventually come to pass,” Mayor Anne Haynam said. “It’s meaningful to people here.”


The summer’s first “Picnic in the Park” at Bancroft Street Park was held recently.

“We had about 20 residents painting little signs on the power poles around the village,” Haynam said. “About 25 people showed up.”

The next Picnic in the Park will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 21. An Irish folk band will perform.

Hiram Township

The Hiram Township Trustees are putting a renewal on the November ballot for the EMS levy as well as the road and bridge levy.

Freedom Township

Freedom’s third annual “Christmas in July” will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 13 at Freedom Town Hall at 8966 state Rte. 700. The event, which supports the Freedom Park Committee, will feature food vendors, craft vendors and a car show.

“It’s fun,” township Chair Tom Mesaros said. “A lot people show up for it.”


The annual Community Picnic will take place at noon Sunday, July 21 in the pavilion at Town Hall at 8966 state Rte. 700. The First Freedom Congregational Church will barbecue hot dogs and hamburgers, for which there will be no cost. The township will supply fried chicken, pop, water and ice. Nelson Township

The Nelson Township Trustees recently passed an amendment banning the sale of marijuana – dispensaries or stores – in Nelson Township.


An amendment was also passed by the township trustees limiting the size of solar panels in residential areas of the township.
