County roundup: Community garage sale coming up in Garrettsville, plus news from Hiram and Mantua

Garrettsville

The Garrettsville Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual community-wide garage sale will be all day Friday, May 16 to Sunday, May 18. To be part of the garage sale, call the Chamber at 330-527-2411 or go to the Chamber office at 8088 Main St.


The first Garrettsville Car Cruise of the season will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 24 on Main Street downtown. The event will feature DJ Crazy Dave, door prizes and other awards.


The annual golf outing, a Summerfest fundraiser, will take place Saturday, May 24 at Riverview Golf Course.

Village of Hiram

The Village of Hiram’s annual Memorial Day celebration will take place Memorial Day, Monday, May 26. The solemn parade will start at 12:30 p.m. at the Hiram Post Office at 11676 Hayden St. and will conclude at Fairview Cemetery, where there will be a service. Afterward, community members will plant flowers at veterans’ graves.


Village Police Chief Brian Gregory will retire Monday, June 2 after nine years with the police department. Gregory’s replacement will be announced at the village council meeting Tuesday, May 20.


Luke McConville has been hired as the Village of Hiram’s new solicitor.


Village council meetings will now be the third Tuesday of the month instead of the second Tuesday of the month.

Hiram Township

The Hiram Township Trustees received four bids for this year’s chip-and-seal. Each bid was for half of the township roads and one-third of the township roads. If the levy passes in the upcoming primary election, half of the roads will be done.

Village of Mantua

Stay Active and Independent for Life – SAIL into the future with exercises designed for those 65 and older. Stay mobile and energetic. Join in at the Crestwood Community Center at 11 a.m. Wednesdays May 7, May 14, May 21 and May 28 at Buchert Park Lodge at 4810 E. High St.


Walk the trails of Buchert Park at noon Wednesday, May 7 weather permitting. Have lunch on your own, or bring a dish to share. See Jen Vanek for private foot care if needed. Meet at noon at the Crestwood Community Center at Buchert Lodge.


The Portage County District Library Bookmobile will be at Buchert Park on Wednesdays from May 7 to May 28. Check out new books, return old ones, meet new friends and participate in library programs.


A ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house for Beacon Hues Stained Glass Studio will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at 10511 Main St. The event will feature tours and snacks.


Join the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and help clean up the scenic Cuyahoga River at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, May 31 at Buchert Park. The event is to help protect this valuable natural resource.

Mantua Township

A fundraising dinner for the Mantua Restoration Society will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 9 in the Mantua Center School Gymnasium at 11741 Mantua Center Rd. You can either dine in or carry out. A variety of entrées will be provided by Main Street on the River. Also on the menu will be soup, casseroles, cornbread, salad and a variety of desserts, including homemade pies, all of which are home-cooked and donated by MaRSI members. Light piano music will be provided by Steve Stork.

There is no charge for dinner, but donations will be accepted that will help provide funds for the restoration and upkeep of Mantua Center’s historic buildings and sites. For more information, contact Susan Pollard at 330-586-8337.
