Atwater

A letter was received from the federal Surface Transportation Board asking for input on environmental issues and/or concerns associated with the consolidation of the Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern railways, which would create the Union Pacific transcontinental railway.

Along with Atwater Fire Department Chief Jason Brock, the board raised concerns regarding the increased rail traffic that is predicted, including the township’s ability for emergency personnel to be able to traverse through the township that has six crossings that lie within it and making sure there are better lines of communicating when and which tracks will be closed and for how long. There is concern regarding the increased noise factor, along with the increased vibration damage from heavier tonnage allowed.

These concerns will be forwarded by the trustees to the Surface Transportation Board, Office of Environmental Analysis. 

The Atwater Board of Trustees recently approved an updated LED lighting project for the exterior of the Town Hall. This project will also include new lighting for the flagpole and the memorial that is in front of the Town Hall. The township would like to thank the Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council for the NEC grant monies that made this project possible.

The township recently sold property at 1499 Whittlesey Ave. that was rehabilitated and acquired with the help of the Portage County Land Bank.

The township is looking for interested residents who would like to volunteer to serve on the township’s Zoning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals. Anyone interested should contact Trustee Charlie Harris at 330-858-9406.

Brimfield

The discussion surrounding data centers continues, including detailed restrictions that are needed in the draft legislation and narrowing down locations that are least impactful on Brimfield Township residents. The Zoning Commission will be requesting a six-month extension to the current moratorium on data centers as it continues to work toward finalizing new legislation.

The next Zoning Commission meeting is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8. The agenda will be available at brimfieldohio.gov shortly.

At the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) meeting on Sept. 9, four residential cases were on the agenda, two of which were tabled and two of which were granted.

Wing Warehouse is now open at 4112 state Route 43 in the Brimfield Plaza.

Pavlik and Reppas Oral Surgery Center has begun site work on state Route 43.

Waffle House has decided not to proceed with the purchase of land on Tallmadge Road.

Randolph

The following are two road closures in Randolph:

• State Route 224 between state Route 44 and New Milford Road will be closed for a short time longer due to culvert replacement.
• Laubert Road between state Route 44 and Hartville Road will be closed through Oct. 31 due to the bridge replacement.

Two picnic tables have been ordered for the pavilion at Randolph Old School Park.

Mogadore

Mogadore’s 2026 fall limb and branch pickup will be from Monday, Oct. 5, to Friday, Oct. 9. Do not put limbs and branches on the curb until after Wednesday, Sept. 30. Place the limbs and branches on the curb and not in the street. The service department will not pick up limbs larger than four inches in diameter. No root bulbs and no entire bushes.

Suffield

The annual Suffield Township Fire Department Open House will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, at the station, which is located at 1256 Waterloo Rd. On site will be:

• Fire department demonstrations
• Firefighter combat challenge activity for kids (not definite)
• Booths for kids
• Ax throwing (Velcro)
• Duma Ranch Burger Dispatch truck
• Snow cones
• Popcorn
• Dunk tank
• The Portage County Health District giving out vaccines for the flu and COVID.

S&K Asphalt will be paving the entrance to Wingfoot Lake State Park.
