Around Suffield: Summer recap and looking forward to holidays ahead

-

The Suffield United Church of Christ held their Annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in August. The relay ran from 6 p.m. to midnight.

The volunteers began the evening with the ringing of the church bell and the survivor lap.

At dusk, the luminary ceremony was held outside in the pavilion. The names of those that were remembered and honored were read off and the names displayed by a youth member of the church. Each person broke their glow stick for whom they were walking. Maggie Kreiner sang “Over the Rainbow” with the accompaniment of the church’s Ukulele group. The ceremony ended with a silent lap around the track lit by luminaries.

There were many ways money was raised for the American Cancer Society:

  • Pasta dinner and dessert was served for a donation
  • Bingo cards were sold to play for prizes
  • You could “Rent a Youth” to walk the track on your behalf
  • Luminaries were sold in honor or memory of a loved one or friend
  • There was a collection of 142 canned goods which were used to anchor the luminaries and then donated to the Randolph, Suffield, Atwater Food Shelf. A total of $3,929.00 was also raised for the American Cancer Society.

All donations go toward cancer research, to expand patient care and advocacy, and offer support to families and survivors.

Many thanks to everyone that participated or supported this important event.
