Around Suffield: Clean energy loans, the Randolph Fair and a pirate wedding
- Pauline Shane
The Suffield Township Trustees Tom Calcei, Jared Phillip and Jeff Eldreth along with Lori Calcei, Fiscal Officer, met in July. One of their important actions was that they, working with the Portage County Port Authority, voted to establish the county’s first Energy Special Investment District (ESID) which will allow businesses to take advantage of low-interest Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) loans.
PACE financing is a program with great benefits, made just for investments in energy efficiency upgrades to commercial properties in Ohio. Once the ESID is completed, other Portage County communities will be able to join, and businesses in Suffield and those in other communities can use these financing options for qualifying projects.
Everyone is invited to attend the trustee meetings held in the Suffield Township Fire Department’s Community Room, twice a month: the second Tuesday at 8 p.m. and the fourth Tuesday at 7 a.m.

On a joyous note: Terry Ginn and Mitzie Atkins tied the knot on April 14 at a destination-type wedding on the pirate ship “The Black Raven” in St. Augustine, Florida.
Mitzie was teased if she had to “walk the plank” before agreeing to marriage. She said it was a happy decision to wed Terry. Everyone agrees they complement each other and are a great couple.
The gracious hosts to share and celebrate their “new love and new dreams” had a wedding reception of their nuptials on July 15 at Wingfoot Lake State Park Pine Tree Shelter.
The party’s themed décor was everything “pirates.” Many came dressed in pirate attire. There were huge posters depicting pirate scenes where guests could take souvenir photos. Terry and Mitzie posed for pictures with friends and family in front of the posters. The best photos were of the couple with their moms: Terry’s mom Joan Ginn and Mitzie’s mom Barbara Gill
A ten-minute torrential downpour could not dampen the festivities going on inside. Everyone enjoyed outdoor games including cornhole, kickball, cards/Dominos, ax throwing and putt-putt golf. More entertainment involved three bands: Bluemoon Dogs, Suffield Station and My Drunk’n Uncle. Many line danced with moves some could only imagine.
The couple provided the main dish, but requested in lieu of gifts bring a side dish, so there was an unbelievable array of deliciousness. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful lighted dessert table with cupcakes topped with pirate decorations
Terry and Mitzie both volunteer their time with the Suffield community. They help with many events like the memorial day parade, Easter egg hunts, and Santa to name a few. Terry and Mitzie met at the SuffFest Music Festival in 2018.
A reminder that the Randolph Fair is opening August 22 through August 27. The Fair exhibits the talents of area 4H participants. The 4Hers get to display the animals that they have raised and cared for, in most cases from babies to mature animals. One of the most important events is when they show their animals for ribbons. But, the most hilarious portion of the fair is when they dress themselves and their animals in unique costumes. The animals do not always react positively, but will show resistance and displeasure of being dressed up. The handlers have to show they can display obedience to follow their commands to get positive reactions for the judges. The event receives the most laughs.
Also at the Randolph Fair, The Portager has a booth and it is a great time to meet Ben and his fellow associates. Also a fair highlight is to enjoy the delicious food and great live entertainment.
