Around Suffield: Chili cook-off incoming to fight the chill
- Pauline Persons
Suffield has quite a few activities scheduled for February!
First, please mark your calendar for Saturday, Feb. 7 for an event that will help “warm you up”: the Annual Super Bowl Chili & Soup Cook-off! The event will take place at the Suffield Lions Club at 1128 E. Waterloo Rd. (next to Suffield Elementary School). Soup entries will be accepted at 5:30 p.m., with doors opening for dinner at 6 p.m.
This is a true community event, sponsored in conjunction with the Suffield League, Suffield Lions and the Suffield Historical Society. Anyone can enter their best chili recipe or one of their favorite soup recipes. Folks will be able to sample and vote on the tastiest chili and soups, and winners will receive prizes (you could immediately become the neighborhood celebrity chef!).
There will also be a few raffles to check out.
Along with the various delicious soups and chili, cornbread is provided and beverages will be available. In addition, the Girl Scouts will satisfy your sweet tooth with their home-baked goodies sale.
A donation of $5 is suggested for all you can eat. All proceeds benefit the Randolph/Suffield/Atwater Food Shelf.
Go to www.facebook.com/Suffield.League for more information, or contact Sally Knepp at 330-221-4899 or kneppmassagesolutions.com.
It will be a delicious and fun event, so we hope to see everyone there!
To help combat the snow and freezing winter weather, it’s time to look for some fun and entertainment. The Suffield League’s annual Laugh at the Lake is just the answer! An evening of comedians, jokes, laughter and memories, along with a delicious dinner, will help shorten these winter months.
Jeff Blanchard and fellow comedians will provide a night of humor Saturday, Feb. 28 at St. Nicholas Hall in Mogadore. Doors open at 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, with dinner served at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $60. To purchase tickets or for more information, contact Tom Calcei at 330-256-8042, Terry Ginn at 330-472-6483 or Kyle Kreiner at 330-628-1580, or visit www.facebook.com/Suffield.League.
You can also pick up tickets at Legends & Lore at 1437 State Route 43, Unit B, in Suffield Plaza; or at Knight Graphics at 1336 Town Square Dr. in Kent (phone: 330-673-3484).
More from the Suffield League
At its recent monthly meeting, the Suffield League presented the Suffield Community Athletic Association with a $10,000 check for new fencing and various improvements for the baseball fields at Suffield Elementary School.
Adam Geiger and three other SCAA members attended the meeting. The group is active in coaching and supports the baseball and softball leagues.
In the past, the Suffield League has also funded aluminum benches for the baseball fields.
Suffield League meetings are held at 7 p.m. the first Sunday of the month downstairs in Town Hall. We invite everyone to attend.
The Mead and Read Book Club meets at 6 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month at the Crafted Artisan Meadery.
Everyone is welcome to attend even if you have not read the book – it is always fun to hear various opinions about the book being discussed. Here is the list for the upcoming months:
- Feb. 18 – “The Last Letter” by Rebecca Yarros
- March 18 – “The Silent Patient” by Alex Michaelides
- April 15 – “The Last House on Needless Street” by Catriona Ward
- May 20 – “Party of Liars” by Kelsey Cox
You can reserve or pick up a copy of each month’s book at the Mogadore Branch Library.
The Crafted Artisan Meadery is located at 1292 Waterloo Rd. in Suffield (if the parking lot is full, you can park across the street).
