Around Ravenna: Warm up with these community events coming up this month

- Angie Reedy

The 39th annual Celebration of Lights was held in December at the University Hospitals Portage Medical Center in Ravenna, hosted by the hospital’s Auxiliary. It was a successful evening and the committee wants to thank everyone who came, donated money or helped in any way for their participation, and especially Shorts-Spicer-Crislip Funeral Homes for its sponsorship.

The Ravenna Eagles’ fish fries continue from 4 to 7 p.m. Fridays at the club, located at 812 Cleveland Rd. Dinners include fish, shrimp, chicken (or combos) or pork chop dinners, with side dishes, at $15 each.

Dinners are dine-in or carry-out and are open to the public. To order ahead, call 330-296-9463.

A Puzzle Exchange for Adults will be held from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 in the Jenkins Room at Reed Memorial Library at 167 E. Main St. in Ravenna. Those attending should bring some puzzles to exchange.

The library offers lots of activities all month for children, teens and adults. All activities are free and open to the public, no library card required. For more information, call 330-296-2827 or visit www.reedlibrary.org.

Immaculate Conception Parish will host Mardi Gras from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Immaculate Conception Hall at 251 W. Spruce Ave. in Ravenna. Those attending should come dressed to celebrate Mardi Gras. Cost is $20 per ticket.

Entertainment will be provided by Hot Jazz Seven - Dixieland Band. The event will feature appetizers, soft drinks, coffee, beer and wine. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. Guests must be 21 years or older to attend.

The parish hall will also be the site for the Immaculate Conception Parish monthly spaghetti dinner, which will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19. The dinner is open to the public and includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread, drink and dessert. Due to increasing costs, the price of adult dinners will be $14. Thank you for your understanding. Carry-out meals will also be available.

Around Ravenna: A Ravenna resident’s family journey through Germany

Planes, trains and automobiles were part of a three-week vacation. Jack Trauth of Ravenna flew to London to visit his daughter, Karrie, and her wife, Angela. He and Karrie flew to Switzerland to meet his son, Jim, his wife, Mariana, and grandson Evan. Adding to the excitement of the outing were travel by a dual-gauge railroad, a cog rail, a zip line, a funicular (a cable railroad, especially one on a mountainside, where ascending and descending cars are counterbalanced) and a vintage paddle wheel boat.
