Around Randolph: Waterloo raffle supports local family

- Sandy Engle

There was a huge turnout for the Waterloo Back to School Bash. Besides having a dedication ceremony for the new track and performances by the Waterloo marching band, many wellness organizations were present to share about the services they provide. All proceeds from the PTO raffle went to the Hayes family. Elizabeth Hayes is a Waterloo teacher, and JJ Hayes is a nurse/Randolph firefighter. Recently, their 10-year-old daughter, Eva, passed away from leukemia. Please keep this family in your prayers.

Due to Waterloo Schools being eligible for CEP, all students can receive a free breakfast and lunch during the 2025-26 school year. Breakfast will be served at 7:45 a.m. each school day. The first day of school is Aug. 27.

Waterloo Community Helping Hands is collecting school supplies to help Waterloo students. Please drop off backpacks, spiral notebooks, pencils, pens, solid-colored folders, glue, binders, scissors, crayons, markers, magic erasers, school supply boxes, calculators and more at totes that are at Randolph Home Furnishings, the Randolph Fire Department and the Atwater Fire Department. Or, you can order supplies online and have them shipped to WCHH, P.O. Box 413, Randolph, OH 44265. For more info, go to https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F48ABAD28A3FDCF8-57780015-school#/.

The 167th Portage County Randolph Fair runs from Aug. 19-24. In 1858, admission to the county fair was 10 cents. Inflation has upped the cost of the fair to its current price of $10 per day; however, children 9 and under continue to be free. If you arrive before 3 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, the early bird rate admission is $5. On Aug. 22, all people over 60 and veterans are admitted for free. In 1870, due to torrential rains the fair only lasted a couple hours. Thank goodness we now have many fair buildings to browse in no matter what the weather!

Around Randolph: Waterloo agriculture students excited for the future of farming

- by Sandy Engle .

Nov. 9-15 was Ohio Soil Health Week, and throughout Ohio there were events to honor the soil. Surprisingly, within a spoonful of soil there are more living organisms than there are people currently on this planet. As we enter this season of delicious festivities, may we be grateful to the farmers and soil microbes which make our food nutritious and tasty.

Around Randolph: Walk a mile for veterans

- by Sandy Engle .

In a time when it’s easy to dwell on the world’s problems, Portage County Auditor Matt Kelly is choosing action over apathy. He was inspired by a friend who walked 22 miles a day across America to increase awareness of the 22 veterans a day that lose their life to suicide.
