“The future depends on what we do in the present.” Mahatma Gandhi
Sixty senior citizens walked 7 to 12 miles a day with the Great Ohio Climate March to bring greater awareness of the dangers of horizontal shale drilling on public lands and mega data centers. As the only participant from Portage County, I learned that Ohio is the only state in the nation that allows its state parks to be horizontally drilled (commonly nicknamed fracking). A rig is scheduled to go up a fourth of a mile off the main entrance of Salt Fork Park and then they will drill under Salt Fork Lake which is used for swimming, paddle boarding, and kayaking. Horizontal drilling brings forth massive amounts of air emissions and radioactivity that are linked to an increase in asthma, childhood leukemia, various cancers and other diseases.
Unfortunately, SB219 passed on June 3 which allows surface drilling on public lands including state parks (which would cause plumes of toxic pollution and mammoth gas/oil rigs in Salt Fork State Park and other public lands in the near future). To see how your state representative voted on SB219 check out this link. https://www.legislature.ohio.gov/legislation/136/sb219 If you are appalled by this, please contact your state representative.
Governor DeWine has the power to veto surface drilling on public lands. To leave him a message call 614-644-4357.
If you are concerned about mega data centers you can sign a petition for a statewide moratorium on mega data centers at Mila’s Hope & Rowyn’s Dream Playground 1776 Rt. 44 in Randolph on Monday June 22 from 2-4 p.m. For more information about this statewide initiative check out www.conserveohio.com.
