Around Garrettsville: Murder mystery dinners, Sherlock Holmes auditions, Halloween plans and more coming up in Garrettsville

The Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard is hosting its murder mystery event, “A Pep Rally to Die For,” on Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Haunted JAG Campus.

Written exclusively for NGCC and performed by Curtains up Theatre, this fundraiser promises to have attendants searching for clues and prowling around the haunted campus utilizing their best detective skills. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with the event starting at 5 p.m. Appetizers and dinner will be served.

The cost for this event is $30 per person or $50 per couple and includes both dinner and the murder mystery experience. There will also be a Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle.
Be sure to wear your best JAG attire to be entered in the dead or alive JAG spirit(s) contest.

The Garrettsville Curtains up Theatre is holding auditions for its January production of “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 1 and 2 at the James A. Garfield School Campus (enter through the Event Door entrance). No monologue is required; reading from the script will be done in place of a monologue. The play runs Jan. 19, 20, 21, 26 and 27. The grand opening of the outdoor Park Avenue pickleball court will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7. Come out and learn how to play and enjoy an exhibition of the game.


Bingo is still being held in the St. Ambrose Church Hall on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Doors open at 5:45 p.m., with early bird starting at 6:45 p.m. Visit St. Ambrose Church at 10692 Freedom St. to get your bingo fix.


The Eagles Club in Garrettsville opens its doors to the public from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays for wings with the purchase of a beverage. The Eagles Club is located on Water Street in Garrettsville.


Congratulations to 2023 Homecoming King Keegan Sell and Queen Zoey May, along with junior Colorbearers Hallie Cebula and Marshall Dahlen. The remaining Homecoming Court members are: Aaron Rodhe, Landen Gedeon, Caleb Canan, Deacon Sommer, Gabriel Groves, Leah Bailey, Sophia Butto and Addisyn Miller.


The Garrettsville Area Chamber’s Chili Cook-off will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 during the Fall Festival. You must pre-register no later than Saturday, Oct. 17 at [email protected] to enter the cook-off.


In addition to the Chili-Cook-off is the Chamber of Commerce’s Fall Festival. The festival will be held on the Buckeye Block. Come on down and enjoy mums, apple cider, fry pies, live music, face painting, and the fun scarecrow pageant. Be sure to vote for your favorite scarecrow.

All area businesses, residents and teachers are being asked to create their own original scarecrow and enter it in the pageant. Scarecrows must be free-standing and dropped off at Buckeye Block. Prizes will be awarded for three categories: spookiest, funniest and most creative. To register, contact the Chamber at [email protected] by Saturday, Oct. 17 (same as the Chili Cook-off).


Vincent Patrick Realty is hosting its Halloween yard decorating contest. Decorate your yard for Halloween and enter to win a prize! Drive around and view the decorated houses. The winner will receive a prize pack from local businesses. Participants must register by Tuesday, Oct. 10. Voting will take place from Oct. 17 to 31. Entry with the most votes will be announced Nov. 1.


The Friends of the Garrettsville Library Book Sale will be held this week in the library meeting room on the following days: Friends “Members Only” Preview from 2 to 6 p.m. TODAY; open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday; and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Saturday is Bag Day — fill a bag for $4, the library supplies the bag. Membership in the Friends is just $5 per year and may be purchased at the door or in advance at the library.
