Mogadore

Mogadore Village Council passed legislation to start the Herbert Street/Meadowridge Road infrastructure job in August.

This project will bring new water lines, sanitary sewers, sidewalks, curbs and concrete streets to Herbert Street between Marion Avenue and Meadowridge, and Meadowridge south of Herbert Street. The job will be completed by next spring.

The projected price will be approximately $1.5 million. The village has received a grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission for about half of that total.

Village council authorized spending approximately $144,000 for new playground equipment at Lions Community Park.

“They’re getting the equipment from a company called ParkPlay Solutions,” Mayor Mike Rick said. “It will replace most of the equipment in the front playground area at the park. We project the work to be done in August, but it might go over into the first week of September.”

Council passed legislation to pay up to $44,000 to the Mogadore High School Athletic Boosters to help replace the fence and backstop at the high school baseball field at Lions Community Park. That is about half of what the total cost will be.

Suffield

The Suffield Township Trustees are reviewing with the Portage County prosecutor legislation they passed in 2016 that prohibits marijuana shops and cultivating marijuana in the township.

“We’re just going to make sure, now that marijuana is legalized,” township Chair Jeff Eldreth said, “that we’re still legally allowed to prohibit the marijuana stores and cultivation of marijuana in the township.”

The township sold its old grass-fire truck for about $19,420. The new one is already in service.

Atwater

Portage County Treasurer John Kennedy presented information on the “Portage GrowLink” program that is offered through his office. This is a low-interest loan for Portage County homeowners, family farms and/or small businesses to make needed upgrades/repairs or grow their small businesses. The program is made possible by the county depositing a portion of its investment pool into participating local banks. In exchange, the banks make low-cost loans available to borrowers discounted by up to 3% below what a bank would normally offer. For program details, call the treasurer’s office at 330-297-3586.

The Atwater Fire Department has three new fire cadets — Jeremiah Willis, Zach Mignano and Landyn Zerkle. All three had recently attended the Viking Fire Academy. Aaron Hart, a former cadet, will be attending the Firefighter I course.

Willis, an Eagle Scout candidate, will be presenting a project to the township trustees for consideration that will involve a new sign for the township’s German Reformed Cemetery along with plans on how to clean up the landscaping.

The Waterloo Community Helping Hands group will be installing a community library box at the Olde School Park.

Township Trustee Dale Wiley continues to work on getting quotes to address needed building repairs at Town Hall and issues with its acoustics.

The board of trustees accepted the resignation of Zoning Commission Chair Phil Cox effective Aug. 1.

“We want to thank Phil for his many years of service on this board,” township Chair Thora Green said.
