Mogadore
The annual Mogadore Memorial Day Parade will start at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27 at James Street.
The parade will continue onto Cleveland Avenue and then Mogadore Road and will conclude at Greenwood Cemetery, where there will be a ceremony at approximately 10:30 a.m. The cemetery is located at 3809 Mogadore Rd. The ceremony’s speaker will be Missy Moore, who is Ravenna’s Western Reserve VFW Post 1055 first female commander.
Before the parade, at 9:30 a.m., there will be a bike-decorating contest for children ages 3 to 9 in the Mogadore Municipal Building’s parking lot at 135 S. Cleveland Ave. There will be judges, and the winners will be awarded trophies. All participants will ride in the parade along with local veterans, the Mogadore High School marching band, local youth baseball and softball teams, and other groups.
Village council passed legislation to advertise for bids for the next infrastructure project: new sewer and water lines as well as concrete streets and sidewalks for the Herbert Street extension between Meadowridge Road and Marion Avenue, and Meadowridge Road south from Herbert Street. The estimated cost of the project is $1.6 million. Half of the cost will be covered by a grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Village council approved the purchase of new playground equipment for Lions Community Park at a cost of approximately $144,000.
Suffield
Suffield Township’s annual Memorial Day Parade will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27. The parade will start at the corner of Waterloo Road and Catherine Street and conclude at Suffield Elementary School, located at 1128 Waterloo Rd. A ceremony will be held at the school by the flagpole. Anyone who would like to be in the parade should show up at 9 a.m. at the corner of Waterloo Road and Catherine Street for the parade lineup.
Suffield Township will hold its fourth annual car show from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 9 at Suffield Town Hall at 1262 Waterloo Rd. There will be music and food, including Katie’s Corner selling ice cream and Farmhand Coffee selling specialty drinks and coffee. Also, at 1:30 p.m. the Portage County Sheriff’s Department will put on a dog demonstration.
The Suffield Fire Department recently hired three part-time firefighters. They are Nathan Hornack, Leslie Hafler and Travis Barton.
Atwater
At the April 23 Atwater Township Trustees meeting, several citizens spoke of the concern/problem of kids riding dirt bikes and four-wheelers on the roads. This problem has been ongoing, and they would like to see more sheriff patrols. It was asked of the trustees to have the sheriff come to a meeting to speak about these concerns and answer any questions. The request was directed to Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski, and he sent a representative to the May 14 township trustees meeting.
Atwater’s Memorial Day Parade will take place Monday, May 27, beginning at noon. Entries are welcome up to start time. If an entry would like to be judged for awards to be given, call Peggy T. before May 27 to register. All entries need to enter Bank Street from State Route 224 to line up. The grand marshal this year is Tom Ludlam, and the Waterloo High School honor student speaker is Nathan Roberts. The Waterloo Princess is Grace Abbe, and the Waterloo Prince is Isaac Biltz. The Waterloo band will also perform.
Per recommendation by Fire Chief Jason Brock, the board of trustees hired Nathan Roberts as an FFII. Roberts has been a cadet with the Atwater Fire Department for several years and has been taking classes to earn his FFII certification while finishing his high school career. Chief Brock spoke highly of him and is very happy to have him as an official member of the department.
The township trustees hired Kaitlyn Zufall-Rothermel as the Town Hall custodian at a rate of $15 per hour.
Motion passed to accept the PorCo auditor’s estimated property tax revenue for the 2.25 mill Fire Department 5-year renewal levy.
Motion passed to adopt Resolution 5-2024 to proceed with the Atwater Fire Department’s five-year renewal levy to continue to provide funding for the department. This levy will appear on the November ballot. The 2.25 mills amounts to $56 for each $100,000 of the county auditor’s appraised value and is estimated to produce $119,000 for the fire department.
