County roundup: Edinburg Township considers joint fire district, plus news from Paris and Rootstown

- Roger Gordon

Edinburg

Edinburg Township is in the very, very preliminary stages of having a joint fire district with Charlestown, Paris, Palmyra and Deerfield townships.

“If this eventually happens, we wouldn’t have as many fire departments so to speak,” township Vice Chair Chris Diehl said. “Everybody would kind of share the load.”

Paris

The Paris Township Trustees passed a resolution on a piece of property at 9483 Newton Falls Rd. that has a burned-out house on it. The trustees had to pass the resolution in order for the Portage County Land Bank to take it over and raze the home. The resolution declared the property a public nuisance.

“I think the Land Bank will offer the property to the neighbors first and, if nobody buys it, then the public,” township Chair Dave Kemble said.

At the last township trustees meeting, a representative from Spectrum gave a presentation regarding fiber optics being put in at the Paris Township Fire Department, the Shearer Community Center and the Paris maintenance garage to upgrade their computer and phone systems.

“We approved it,” Kemble said. “It will take three months to do it.”

Rootstown

The annual Light It Up Rootstown event was held Dec. 7 downtown. All the lights were turned on, Santa and Mrs. Claus were there, and there were crafts, hot dogs and drinks. Also, awards were given out to the township homes with the best Christmas lights.

“We had 200-300 people there,” township Chair Dave McIntyre said.

The annual Christmas Eve service at Fairhaven Church/Noah’s Ark Daycare Center at 4524 Lynn Rd. will be held at 5:30 p.m.

Several students from Southeast High School’s band and choir recently participated in the All-Ohio State Fair Band and Choir during the Ohio State Fair. Five of the choir members were also chosen to be Scarlet Singers and opened for the band Foreigner. Several alumni also made it back to perform with the band and choir as well.
