The weather has not improved much during the past 30 days. We are having that winter we used to have … and I personally have had enough of it!
Thinking about heading someplace warmer for a few days or weeks? Do not forget to ask for a discount. Airlines, Amtrak, and buses will give seniors a discount … but you have to ask for a discount.
When you arrive at your destination, ask the hotel for a discount, they all have one.
Before you head out of town, you might want some new clothes — check out Kohls, and T.J. Maxx for discounts on those needed items. They both have discount days for seniors.
Even on these services, the eligibility age will vary from 55 to over 60. I wonder what this five years difference really makes?
Not wanting to travel but looking for an afternoon escape, how about a movie? Cinemark offers discounts on Tuesdays, AMC discounts tickets $1 to $4 depending on the movie. Our local theaters in Garrettsville, Kent and Ravenna all offer discounts for senior citizens. You just have to ask.
Another possible way to escape this “marvelous” weather is to do some remodeling or decorating to your living space (take your mind off the snow and ice outside). Both Lowes and Home Depot offer 10% discounts to veterans and their spouses.
I was just reminded by the Kent Stater (Kent State University’s newspaper), that one way to get a free meal is to sign up for “free rewards” programs at area restaurants. Many offer free meals or appetizers when you eat there (order) on your birthday. For instance, McDonald’s gives free medium fries, while Chipotle gives free chips and guacamole or salsa when you eat there on your birthday; Marco’s Pizza gives a free small one-topping pizza on your birthday when you sign up for their rewards program online.
In addition to these free offers of food, check out Papa John’s, Raising Cane’s, Wendy’s, Dairy Queen, Arby’s, Subway, and Sheetz (free doughnut), they all offer something free on your birthday.
I know it can be a pain signing up for all of these reward programs, but just think of what you have to gain: something different to eat and the price is right — free.
I have five nephews who were in the service during Vietnam. On Veterans Day, several of them get together and go out to claim their free meals starting with breakfast, and all the way through dinner!
Think about the opportunity these free meals offer you. Who says you have to eat them all on the same day? Put some in your freezer and save them for another day!
Retail outlets want your business, and there is a lot of competition for your money, so take advantage of their offers, and accept the fact that you will probably get a lot of mail in your mailbox and on your computer from these businesses when you sign up for their “rewards programs.” But the hassle should be less than the rewards you will receive. Remember to sign up for these reward programs before your birthday!
