The Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program will be writing a bi-monthly column for the Portager entitled “Rooted Ramblings.” Look for our column every other Friday.
Who are we? We are volunteers who train through the Ohio State University Extension and then assist with educational programs and activities for our communities through the Portage OSU Extension County office.
These columns will focus on our approach to gardening using environmentally sound, research-based garden practices, looking at what is happening in our gardens, diagnosing gardening issues, sharing recipes, and responding to your questions. What would you like to read about? What questions do you have about your gardens? We would love to hear from you.
We are busy working on projects in Portage County, Coleman Adult Day, Edible Kent, Holden Elementary School, Leighton Elementary School, Ohio Victory Gardens – Let’s Grow, Portage County Seed Libraries, Portage Garden Helpline, Shepherds House, and the Thomas Anderson Gardens Monuments. We have booths at the Haymaker Farmers’ Market, Kent Fest, and the Randolph Fair. The PCMGVs also have a speaker’s bureau and are available to speak to your group on a variety of topics.
You may visit our booth at the Haymaker Farmers’ Market on the first and third Saturdays of the month, May through September. Please drop by to ask any of your most pressing horticultural questions, as well as receive Portage County Master Gardener Volunteer class information and educational handouts. The market is under Haymaker Parkway bridge.
Gardening classes are done in conjunction with the Portage County Soil and Water Conservation District, beginning Saturday, April 19: Session 1: The 4 R’s of Climate Smart Landscaping: Rethink, Remove, Replant, and Restore. Speaker: Judy Semroc. 10 am to noon, Hobbs Hall, UU Church, 217 N. Mantua Street, Kent, Ohio 44240. To register for this FREE event: climate-smart-landscaping-tickets
