Maplewood Career Center and The Renaissance Family Center collaborate to support the Windham community

Maplewood Career Center and The Renaissance Family Center have teamed up to make a meaningful impact on the Windham community. The Renaissance Center has always offered support to the citizens of Windham, but its reliance on donations resulted in a growing list of repairs. The center faced challenges with heating, outdated lighting, and an aging boiler system. Responding to this need, the Electrical and HVAC students from Maplewood Career Center stepped in to help revitalize the space. “After visiting the job site, I realized we had an opportunity to assist the residents of Windham and bring light and warmth to their center,” said Joe Svonavec, Electricity Instructor.

Under the guidance of instructors Joe Roth and Joe Svonavec, students undertook a comprehensive renovation of the lighting and repaired malfunctioning heating units. The Electricity students replaced 560 lights with new, energy-efficient LED light bulbs. They installed power, updated fixtures, and added recessed lights to brighten the building. Meanwhile, Maplewood’s HVAC students worked to enhance the heating and cooling systems. They cleaned vents, replaced filters, performed essential maintenance, and repaired an aging boiler system. They even restored heat to a hallway that had been cold for over 15 years. This hands-on experience provided students with invaluable opportunities to troubleshoot and learn in a real-world setting. “They gained practical field experience while giving back to the community,” stated HVAC Instructor Joe Roth.

The leaders of Calvary Chapel Silver Creek Church and The Renaissance Family Center expressed their appreciation for the students’ efforts. Pastor Thom Charvat noted, “I’m amazed by the students’ drive, professionalism, and work ethic. I would hire them in a heartbeat. They are the future leaders that the trades need today.” Executive Director of The Renaissance Family Center, Betty Gray, smiled as she spoke about the students’ contributions. “People are thrilled to see the students involved in this project. They are not only impressed with the repairs made, but also with how polite and respectful the students are. The impact of what they have achieved in just a few short weeks is immeasurable.”

While this work will benefit the entire Windham community, it is clearly rewarding for the students as well. They have had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with new systems, troubleshoot issues, and apply their skills; all while giving back to their community. Senior Christian James shared, “This experience has been a joyful way to help the community while learning a great deal. This is a project I will always remember.”
