The Kent City Health Department will host its second annual Health Fair at the recreation center on Franklin Avenue from 1-4 p.m. June 15. All screenings and resources provided will be free of charge, and attendees will receive a $5 Haymaker Farmers’ Market token and entry into a raffle.
The department will offer dental, mental health, feet, hearing, glucose and cholesterol screenings. Attendees will also be able to get their blood pressure and Body Mass Index (BMI) checked.
Car seat safety checks will be available in the semi-circle at Holden Elementary across the street. The department is partnering with the Kent city schools to use the space.
Kent City Health Commissioner Joan Seidel said the idea for a fair came from residents asking for such a neighborhood event.
“Well, we could do that,” Seidel recalled thinking, “so we put it together.”
Last year’s event saw approximately 50 residents come in for resources, and she hopes this number will grow as the program continues.
“For our first one, we thought that was pretty good,” she said.
The department is partnering with Kent State University, AxessPointe Community Health Centers, University Hospitals Portage Medical Center, the Kent city schools and the local farmers’ market.
For those unable to attend, Seidel recommends calling 211 (a line for finding Ohio community services) or calling the Kent Health Department to get access to necessary resources.
