County roundup: NEOMED urgent care temporarily closed, plus news from Palmyra, Deerfield and Paris

Summa Health and NEOMED partnered together the Rootstown Medical Center. Asha Blake/ The Portager.

Rootstown

Summa Health Urgent Care at NEOMED, located at 4211 State Route 44, closed within the last month or so, but it is just a temporary shutdown.

“They’re looking for more employees and more help,” township Vice Chair Dave McIntyre said. “Once they get that, they’ll open up again. They’re looking to open sometime in the first quarter of next year.”

Rootstown rented a paving machine to try something it has never done before.

“The road department isn’t paving streets, though. If it was straight paving, we’d hire an outside company to do that,” McIntyre said. “There are some road berms that need patched and fixed, and our guys in the road department were able to get trained on the paving machine. There are also some things in the township park that the public uses like the playground area that we may be able to clean up. We’ll know more as we figure out how to use the machine.”

The township is looking at holding a grand opening for the dog park at the township park sometime in early August.

Palmyra

The second annual Palmyra Fire Department Open House will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19. The fire station is located at 3956 State Route 225. There will be games and prizes for kids, tours of the fire station, and hot dogs and chips for lunch. Also, kids can try on some turnout gear and wear what firefighters wear. Guardians Advocating Child Safety and Protection will be there passing out some resources, and Safe Kids will be present to talk about cribs and car seats and do some safety checks on car seats for the community.

Township Trustee Bob Dunn has retired mid-term after nine years of service. The board of trustees appointed Rickey Bennett to finish out Dunn’s term.

Deerfield

A recent vehicle crash on Deerfield Circle destroyed the gazebo.

“The female driver was taken to the hospital for a possible broken leg and rib injuries,” township Chair Ed Dean said. “I assume she was arrested. We have to hire a company to build a new gazebo. We’re talking to the insurance company to secure it.”

Paris

Paris passed a motion to purchase two Stihl leaf blowers – one for the road department and one for Hawley Cemetery. Each of the leaf blowers will cost $408.49 for a total of $816.98.

The Paris Township Fire Department received a state EMS grant of $365.95. The grant money will likely be used to purchase medical gloves.

Minyoung Road was recently chip-and-sealed.

The township trustees meeting Thursday, Sept. 7 will be held at 8 a.m. instead of the usual 6 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.
