County roundup: Garrettsville holds fundraiser for Summerfest, plus news from Freedom, Hiram, Mantua, Nelson and Windham

Village of Mantua

The second annual members-only “progressive dinner” for the Mantua-Shalersville Area Chamber of Commerce will be at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20. It will start at Restoration 44 Coffee Company for appetizers, then stop at some new businesses for networking and conclude with dinner at Jake’s Eats. The coffee shop is located at 10675 Main St., and Jake’s Eats is located at 4680 Prospect St.


There will be a “Painting Party” for adults from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Buchert Park.

“We’re painting the inside of the park’s lodge,” Chamber of Commerce President Randy Ellis said.


The Portage County Library District Bookmobile is at Buchert Park from noon to 2 p.m. every Wednesday.


Patrick Frost and Denise DiLellio were appointed as Village of Mantua Council members.

Freedom

Freedom’s annual “Cookies with Santa” was held Dec. 14 at Town Hall. It was sponsored by the Freedom Community Park Boosters. Besides Santa Claus, there were cookies purchased from Maplewood, punch and coffee. Portage County commissioners Mike Tinlin and Sabrina Christian-Bennett were there. The community EMS district was represented as well. For kids, there were coloring books and gifts donated by Shortie C’s Bar & Grill and toys collected by the local Dollar General.


The Freedom Township Trustees accepted their annual 2025 NOPEC community sponsorship grant of $1,000 to sponsor the 2025 community picnic in July, Halloween and “Cookies with Santa.”


The township trustees reappointed members to the township’s zoning commission boards and its board of zoning appeals.

Garrettsville

As a fundraiser for Summerfest 2025, the Summerfest committee is selling $40 Super Bowl squares that pay out $500 per quarter. Squares can be purchased at SkyLane Bowling at 8311 Windham St. There are only 100 squares, and they are available while they last.

Nelson

Anna Mae VanDerHoeven was reappointed as Nelson Township chair, and Mike Kortan was reappointed as township vice chair.

Windham Township

Danny Burns was reappointed as Windham Township chair, and Rich Gano was reappointed as the township’s vice chair.

Village of Hiram

Megan Fogel was appointed as the Village of Hiram’s new fiscal officer.
