Atwater
Portage County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Hawsman was present at the Atwater Trustees meeting May 14 to listen to and answer citizen concerns regarding the ongoing problem of dirt bikes and 4-wheelers on the roads in the township.
Hawsman told the audience that everything on the road must be registered, and riders must be 16 years old with a valid license and motorcycle endorsement if operating a dirt bike. He said there is a “zero tolerance” policy which would result in the machines being towed.
He also explained that pursuing dirt bikes and 4-wheelers does happen, but judgment calls to stop a pursuit must be made when safety becomes an issue.
Eleven members of the fire department will be taking the CPR instructor class.
“That will enable the department to achieve the community outreach programs we want to provide our residents,” township Chair Thora Green said.
The township hired Aaron Hart as a one-year probationary member of the Atwater Fire Department. Hart was a cadet with the department. Meanwhile, firefighter Jeff Mann retired from the department after 19 years of service.
“We thank Jeff for his dedication and service to the department and community,” Green said.
The township purchased an EV (electric vehicle) blanket.
Chastity Baldwin of the “Waterloo Community Helping Hands” group spoke about the organization’s various outreach projects for the Randolph and Atwater communities, which include having school supplies at the school for students and teachers. Adopting community families for a “Christmas in July” is among some of the ideas. Check out the group’s Facebook page at Waterloo Community Helping Hands for news, events and giveaways.
The Community Action Council’s summer lunch program at Atwater Old School Park on Waterloo Road will run through Friday, Aug. 16. The program runs from noon to 1 p.m. weekdays and is free for children ages 1-18. No paperwork is needed.
Jacob Simonetti presented his drawings and supply list for the replacement of the “Welcome to Atwater Sign” that he will be doing for his Eagle Scout project. The township will buy the needed supplies.
“Thanks Chad Roberts for donating the wood for the sign,” Green said.

Mogadore’s annual summer festival will take place from Thursday, July 11 to Saturday, July 13 at Lions Community Park at 194 Hale St.
The festival’s hours will be from 6 to 11 p.m. July 11 and July 12 and noon to 11 p.m. July 13. There will be carnival rides, 15 to 20 food trucks/booths and bands. At sunset July 12 there will be a fireworks show. Around 3 p.m. July 13 there will be a Hungry Howie’s-sponsored pizza-eating contest which Little John from Fox 8 will help judge.
On the same day there will be a parade organized by the Parent Teacher Student Organization. It will begin on Pearl Avenue next to McDonald’s, turn east onto Mogadore Road, turn south onto South Cleveland Avenue, turn west down Prospect Street and conclude at the park. Suffield
Suffield Township’s annual Car Cruise-In was held June 9 on the grounds of the township offices on May Road. There were more than 200 classic cars and upward of 1,000 people overall.
“A cruise-in is a little bit different than a car show in that the cars aren’t judged at a cruise-in,” township Chair Jeff Eldreth said. “With a cruise-in, you just come, park your car, stay for 10 minutes and leave, or stay for four hours. I like it that way because it doesn’t cause comments like, ‘Hey, my car is better than his’ and ‘Why did his car win and not mine?’”
The township trustees will put the renewal for their road levy on the November ballot.
“It’s a 5-year levy,” Eldreth said, “and it’s up for renewal this year.”
