County roundup: Atwater firefighters train for grain bin rescue, plus news from Mogadore and Suffield

Atwater

On Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 5, voting will take place at Atwater Town Hall for Atwater residents. Town Hall is located at 1219 state Route 183. Issue No. 19 on the ballot is a local issue to renew 2.25 mills for the Atwater Fire Department.

Ohio State Fire Marshal Kevin Reardon brought his grain bin rescue teaching simulator trailer to the Atwater Fire Department on Oct. 18. Firefighters received training on how to perform a rescue for individuals who have become trapped in a grain bin. Two different rescues were performed by the firefighters during the training session. The Atwater Township Trustees thank Reardon and Deerfield Farms for providing this excellent training experience.

The township trustees would like to congratulate Atwater firefighter Grace Swain, who recently passed her paramedic class.

The upcoming meeting dates at Town Hall (1219 state Route 183) for November are:

– Wednesday, Nov. 6, 6:30 p.m. – Atwater Zoning Commission
– Tuesday, Nov. 12, 7 p.m. – Atwater Board of Trustees
– Tuesday, Nov. 26, 7 p.m. – Atwater Board of Trustees

Mogadore

The second and final phase of work recently began on the 1.1-mile walking trail at Lions Community Park. Phase 2 costs $200,000 – $150,000 of which will be paid for by an Ohio Department of Natural Resources grant. The village will pay the remaining $50,000.

“The project should be completed in about a week,” Mayor Mike Rick said.

Mogadore’s annual fall leaf pickup program began recently. Residents are asked to put their leaves in between the lawn and the sidewalk and not to place them in the street. Bagged leaves will not be picked up. The street department will make continuous loops around the village for approximately four more weeks.

The Mogadore Historical Society’s final soup-and-sandwich luncheon of the year will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13 at the Russell M. Pry Community Center at 3857 Mogadore Rd. Prices are $4 for soup and $5 for sandwiches, and there will be several varieties of each.

Suffield

More than 2,000 people attended the annual Suffield Fire Department Open House on Oct. 20 in the department’s community room. The event featured the Duma Burger Truck and other food choices, kids activities and the township’s Life Flight helicopter landing.

“It’s a good community event,” township Chair Jeff Eldreth said.
