Around Windham: An important benefit dinner, Browns tickets and more Windham news

There will be a spaghetti benefit dinner for 14-year-old Cairo Serenity Svonavec on Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Windham Community Center; the dinner is sponsored by the Windham American Legion. Please remember that the center has been remodeled and is a lovely space. Cairo, at age 14, is fighting a very rare adult form of cancer. She is making progress, but it is a difficult fight and is predicted to be a long fight as well.

The benefit is at the Community Center at 9647 E. Center St. in Windham. It is scheduled from 1 to 6 p.m., so you can go for either lunch or supper. Cost is $12 for adults and $10 for children. There will be a 50/50 raffle and a large Chinese auction.

Dinner is spaghetti, meatballs, side salad, roll and dessert. Please help Cairo and her family deal with this undoubtedly expensive situation. They need our help, and that is something that Windham is good at. This is a very caring community! For general event inquiries, contact Jonathan Neer at (330) 697-1397.

This fall, the Cleveland Browns have been providing free tickets to the Windham Schools. The recipients are randomly selected from students with perfect attendance for the month. The Browns provide two sets of two tickets. This month, they went to the Oct. 15 game with the 49ers, and 97 students had perfect attendance this month. Joey Fitzsimmons and Malia Elias each won a set of tickets. Alternate recipient was Katrina Holland. Second alternate was Connor Taylor.

Windham Schools has a neat partnership between second-grade students and high school athletes. The older kids read to the little ones. The second-graders are then given a copy of the book!

The American Legion Fish Fry is back! Fish frys are held from 4 to 7 p.m. every Friday at the legion at 9960 E. Center St. and are open to the public.

Come support the Renaissance Family Center at its Country Dinner and Auction this Saturday, Oct. 21. Tickets will help the center continue serving the community of Windham. They appreciate $20 per person, and tickets are sold only before the dinner. Call (330) 326-3003 for tickets and information.

Come help them continue to serve the community with their many worthwhile programs and services. They have food assistance programs, and free clothing assistance is available. They also have activities for all ages from children to senior citizens.

The center’s Second Blessings thrift shop is a place to get items at low expense. I have bought lots of great items there. The items in the auction are fantastic! The dinner includes pork loin, pumpkin chili, roasted Brussels sprouts, green beans, sweet potatoes and salad. There will also be assorted desserts. The doors open at 5 p.m. The dinner is at 5:30, and the auction starts at 6. The Renaissance Family Center is located at 9005 Wil-Verne Dr., off of East Center Street or State Route 303.

The Congregational Church served meals to more than 200 people last Saturday even though it was a cold, rainy day. Meal is by curbside delivery only. The church greatly appreciates the donors who help in many ways plus all the workers who do needed prep work on Friday and all the work on Saturday. Free lunches are served from noon to 1 p.m. the second Saturday of each month.

I was very sad to hear of the closing of Windham Pharmacy. It has provided many with wonderful service for many years. The pharmacy has transferred its prescriptions to the Garrettsville Rite Aid.

I was surprised to read that Windhamite Jake Sweet and partner Danniel Jones have bought the Garrettsville Pharmacy, effective Oct. 31. It will become Elite Pharmacy. As an old lady, it was of interest that they will be offering free home delivery of prescriptions and provide in-home vaccinations! They also own a pharmacy in Canfield.

Windham’s Trick-or-Treat will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29.

The Windham Fire Department Association will have its annual Turkey Raffle on Monday, Nov. 20. Doors open at 6 p.m., and attendees will receive one raffle ticket upon entry. There will be a turkey and gift basket raffle at 6:30 p.m. At 8 p.m., there will be a 50/50 raffle. The winner does not need to be present.
