Around Suffield: Egg hunts, great laughs and more events coming up

The weather was perfect at The Suffield League Easter Egg Hunt

The Suffield League recently enjoyed another “Laugh at the Lake” evening, with the sold-out crowd entertained by comedians Jeff Blanchard, Tim Folger, Michael Gershe and magician Eric Thompson. This year’s event was co-sponsored by the Harry Miller Construction Company.

This was the 14th year for Laugh at the Lake. It started in 2011 and was originally held at Paradise Lake Country Club (Golf Course) for the first 10 years. As the crowd grew, the league had to move the event to St. Nicholas Party Center, a larger venue which always caters wonderful hors d’oeuvres and a buffet dinner to enjoy. The event has been held at St. Nicholas the past four years.

The league would like to thank all those who donated items that were raffled, especially those located right in the Suffield area:

TenPoint/Hunters Outlet – The Bednar family
Paradise Lake Country Club – The Ambach and Bragg families
Artisan Meadery – Kent Waldeck
Pony Express Carryout – Dante Walborn/Mark Davis
Timeless Attic – Edie Graves
Rufener Hilltop Farms – Alvin Rufener
Charlie’s Garage – Terry Chitty
Plum Creek Outdoors – Charles Prather
Hilltop Tavern – Steve Smith family
Rohr’s Wine Room – Rick Rohr
Legends & Lore – Doug Tell

Your generosity helped make the evening a success.

The Easter Bunny joined the fun at The Suffield League’s egg hunt.

The Suffield League held its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Palm Sunday at Wingfoot Lake State Park. There was a great turnout due to the sunny weather. Children had their photo taken with the Easter Bunny, received bags of candy and a special gift if they found the special designated eggs, and contributed canned goods to the Suffield Food Shelf. Everyone joked that the children are so excited and run so fast to find the eggs that the event is over in five minutes.

The Suffield Lions Club will hold its annual Mother’s Day Rose Sale on Saturday, May 10 at Suffield Town Hall, located at the corner of state Route 43 and Waterloo Road. The sale will go from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or until sold out. Roses can also be ordered online at suffieldlionsclub.gov. The very fresh, beautiful roses come in a variety of colors for $25 per dozen. For more information or to place orders, call 330-699-6856 or 330-699-4184.

The Suffield Lions Club continues to be very active, hosting an Area Zone meeting with local clubs from Brimfield, Randolph, Rootstown and Southeast. The clubs enjoyed delicious soups and burgers before their meeting. Discussions followed to share information and exchange different ideas for club activities.

The Lions support various programs, but the most important concerns eyesight/eyeglasses. One hundred years ago, the Lions were challenged by Helen Keller to be the “Knights of the Blind.”

They recently gained a few new members but welcome anyone to visit or join the club. They meet at 7 p.m. the first Monday of the month at the clubhouse, located next to Suffield Elementary School. For more information, contact Fred Mathews at 330-256-5262.

For dedicated Goodyear Blimp watchers, Jim Miller, secretary of the Wingfoot Lake Volunteer Association, advises that the 100th anniversary of the Goodyear Blimp is Tuesday, June 3. Three Goodyear blimps will be in the area, and Wingfoot Lake State Park will be the ideal location to observe the air show. Volunteers would be appreciated to help park staff that day. For more information, please contact 330-628-4720.

The Wingfoot Lake Volunteer Association’s monthly meeting is usually at 9 a.m. the third Saturday of the month at the two-bay garage. The April 26 meeting date was changed due to Easter weekend.

The Suffield bingo games are again being held at 2 p.m. every Wednesday at the Suffield Fire Station’s Community Room. It is a great time to meet with friends and share some fun social time together. For more information, you can contact Shirley Stayer at 330-472-6122.
