Around Suffield: A look at Field Falcons history, plus volunteer opportunities and events

Congratulations to the Field Falcon football team on its 14-12 win over the Mogadore Wildcats on Aug. 23. This victory was monumental due to no Falcons win over the Wildcats since 2004.

But this immediately brought to mind the legendary 1960 win by Suffield over Mogadore. These teams have always had a neighborly rivalry. For years, Mogadore won games over teams from all over the area under the coaching of the famous Ned Novell, so this 1960 game was quite a glorious win.

At the time, Ralph Fox was the Suffield coach. He pulled off the win with a unique, unfamiliar play, which led to Akron Beacon Journal sportswriter Jack Patterson dubbing Coach Fox “The Sly Fox.” The win was controversial, and Mogadore tried to refute the win, but it was deemed legal.

Since Covid, the Randolph Fair has grown again, and 2024 was a great year. The weather cooperated and was more comfortable, with slightly cooler weather versus the stifling heat of past years. The day is spent visiting various displays and exhibits. Because of this year’s warmer weather, area nurseries said all their plants grew ahead of schedule – and if you noticed the plant and veg area at the fair, all the produce seemed larger than usual. The sunflowers that lined the wall were gigantic in height, almost as tall as the building.

The Foster Building held the Suffield Township Historical Society’s interesting display called “All Roads Run Thru Suffield.” STHS President Elizabeth Vence and Gail Reinhart planned the exhibit. This informative exhibit showcased maps of Suffield spanning 1874 to 1973. These maps depicted various land, road and name changes. If you missed the exhibit, it will be displayed in the STHS Museum during open hours from 1 to 4 p.m. on some Sundays or by appointment.

Another reason to stop in the museum is to check out many family history notebooks compiled by the late Bob Longbottom.

If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, the Wingfoot Volunteers might be a good fit for you and/or your family. The volunteers, headed by Jim Miller and wife Cindy, meet at 9 a.m. the third Saturday of the month in the two-bay garage. Due to weather, the group meets from March through October.

Its mission is to organize and implement work projects that will complement the infrastructure and mission of Wingfoot Lake State Park. The volunteers help with projects as needed, but they also enjoy working together and then enjoy some social events.

The volunteers’ latest project is to assist with the October Fall Festival, which will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 26. Activities will include wagon rides, a spooky trail, games, food and the Trunk-or-Treat Halloween event. For more information, contact the park office at 330-628 4720.
