Around Ravenna: Hanging Tour, Hope in a Handbag and more events

I attended Erma Hoover’s 90th birthday celebration Aug. 11 at the Masonic Temple in Ravenna. It was such a lovely affair, with her friends and family attending. Erma was as gracious as ever and tried to speak with everyone there. She did a good job of it. Her family made all the delicious food, and there was plenty of it. Everyone had a great time.

The show will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Registration is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The entry fee is $8.

The event is for vehicles 1990 and older. The first 50 entries will receive a dash plaque; food and drinks will be available for purchase during the show, which is free and open to the public.

September is approaching, and the Immaculate Conception Parish Hall will be hosting its spaghetti dinners starting Thursday, Sept. 19 and continuing through November, then starting up again in January through May. They are always held from 4 to 7 p.m. the third Thursday of the month. The parish hall is located at 251 W. Spruce Ave. in Ravenna. Cost is $12 for adults, $5 for children 5 through 12, and free for children 4 and younger.

Also, don’t forget Safer Futures’ Hope in a Handbag on Sept. 19. It will be held from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent at 228 Gougler Ave.

It will be a fun evening featuring purse bingo, a silent auction, a basket raffle and, of course, hors d’oeuvres. Ticket prices are $50, and the event is open to the public.

The annual fundraiser supports critical victim services here in Portage County, helping the shelter provide more than 2,200 shelter nights and assist more than 1,300 survivors through its crisis line and resource referrals each year.
