Around Garrettsville: Tom Collins Memorial Rotary Trail is officially open at Village Park

The members of Rotary Club of Garrettsville-Hiram recently held their ribbon cutting of the Tom Collins Memorial Rotary Trail at Village Park on South Street. In addition to Rotary and community members, Tom’s family and friends were also in attendance. Attendees made luminaries to place along the trail highlighting the trail and sponsorship signs. Stop by Village Park and take a walk through Tom’s vision, speckled with sponsor signs of adoring friends.

As he did with everything, Tom left our park a better place because of him. Tom Collins passed away Jan. 26, 2022. He was born June 3, 1964 in Warren to Shirley (Marsh) and Charles Collins, Jr., the seventh of nine children. He was married to Sherri for 35 years, and they raised three children: Jessica, Mitchell and Kyle.

Tom was involved for more than 25 years with the Cleveland Clinic Mellen Center and the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. He hoped one day they would find a cure for MS and a better quality of life for himself and others.

He volunteered countless hours with the Sierra Club and the clean energy movement. Tom was also a very active person in the community of Garrettsville and served as a village council member. His efforts through serving with council, Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary and the Portage Parks District will not soon be forgotten as they can be seen all over Garrettsville, from the gardens at the entrance of the Hike and Bike Trail, to lighting of the falls, to updating the equipment for everyone to enjoy in our village parks.

Thank you, Tom, for your visions. You were a special person and friend.
