Around Brimfield: New neighbors, exciting events and will we ever get an Aldi?

Scott's Farm Market

One would think that after living in a rather small community for 43 years, there would not be many new places to discover. That is not the case for our rapidly growing and changing township. The best part of writing “Around Brimfield” is connecting with people and learning about their stories. We are all neighbors, and it is said that a good neighbor is a found treasure.

I discovered a new treasure a few weeks ago when I was perusing Facebook and noticed a post about a newly opened store, Scott Farm Market and Greenhouse at 1977 Meloy Road. I remembered in years past, our family bought our Halloween pumpkins from Jim and Doris Scott, who lived on Meloy Road and wondered if it could be the same farm. Indeed, it was the one that our children fondly remember, but it has passed to the next generation, and they are doing amazing things to expand the farm.

I don’t generally drive through that area, so I was surprised to see a newly constructed farm market. Kevin and Melanie Scott now own the farm, store and greenhouses. Their son, Nick, helped Kevin build the store and is responsible for growing produce in the greenhouses. Daughter, Lindsey Scott Crihfield (yes, this is spelled correctly), teaches second grade at Bio-Med and helps out in the store. According to Kevin and Melanie, who were very friendly, “We specialize in LOCAL!” Meeting new “neighbors” was delightful, and the market promises to be a community treasure.

The store is closed on Mondays and is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays. There will be an official grand opening on Saturday, April 29.

Products they stock include Scott Farm beef and pork, Old Forge Dairy cheese, eggs, Joe Pozuc’s maple syrup, produce, Buckeye Country Creamery A2-A2 dairy products, and more! Additional products will be available as the seasons change.

Having no idea what A2-A2 meant, I did some research and discovered that A2-A2 milk refers to milk that only contains one type of protein — A2 beta-casein. Most milk that is purchased in a store contains both the A1 and A2 beta-casein. According to the label from Buckeye Country Creamery, “A2-A2 milk comes from cows that have a specific, more digestible protein. Many people who experience discomfort or get ill from regular milk can drink A2-A2 milk without any negative side effects.” Who knew!? I’ve never had issues drinking regular milk, but of course, I had to try it, and I will say that the chocolate milk was the best I have ever tasted. So, if you want to find a new neighbor, check out Scott Farm Market and Greenhouse.

Speculation about the opening of Aldi is still going wild on Facebook and on various neighborhood watch sites. March 6 has come and gone, and the building is still empty. Regardless of what people post, there is no official opening date yet. I used to define “eternity” as “the time it takes to potty train a child”; now I define it as “the time until Aldi opens.”

Food for thought: “When strangers start acting like neighbors…communities are reinvigorated.” -Ralph Nader

We are all someone’s neighbors, and as Mr. Rogers would say, “make it a beautiful day in your neighborhood.”
