Around Brimfield: Happy July 4 and lots of events coming up this month

July 4 – Happy Independence Day! Two hundred forty-nine years ago, on July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress ratified the Declaration of Independence, establishing the United States of America! It is a day to be celebrated! May we ever be free!

As a young girl, the game “Telephone” was a popular slumber party activity. Players sat in a circle, and someone would whisper a sentence to the person next to her or him, who then whispered it to the next, and so on. The final player would repeat what was heard, and the person who began would reveal the original statement to see how much it had changed. It almost always ended with a group of girls laughing.

The “game” today could be called “Fakebook” or “Insta-Crap”, and the end result is often hurtful, distorted or untrue statements, and the circle of players has gotten much larger because it is played on social media. It is not funny when truth is morphed, often resulting in angry, misinformed people. Too often, one single voice of negativity can appear to be a multitude of negative voices. “Anger never persuades. Hostility builds no one. Contention never leads to solutions.” – Russell M. Nelson. We don’t have to play that game; we can do better, one person at a time.

The Village of St. Edward

The Village of St. Edward is a non-profit, faith-based, locally operated senior living facility being built next to Aldi. The village is known for being an active community supporter and has already made a generous donation to our parks & recreation department. Groundbreaking is planned for mid-July.

Bill and I recently attended the annual Village Fest held at its facility in Green and had a most enjoyable time. The extravaganza included live music, a silent auction, bourbon pull, raffles, friendly people and, most of all, amazing food! We were so impressed with the spectacular presentation and taste of their offering of food that I had to inquire who did the catering. To my shocking surprise, all the food was prepared in-house by their staff! The Village of St. Edward will be a wonderful addition to our community!
