Brimfield Townhall and Fire Station

Around Brimfield: Brimfest is coming up and the new town hall is finally complete

A few years back, I saw a comic strip that made me laugh out loud. It showed a person sneaking in the dark of the night to leave zucchini on his neighbor’s porch. The neighbor suddenly opens his door, rifle in hand, demanding that the man step away from his porch, take his zucchini and move on. If you have considered doing this with your excess garden produce, there is a better solution.

Our friends at the Brimfield Bread Oven have once again put their red “Sharing Cart” outside the front door, and it is waiting to be filled. The cart will remain there throughout the harvest season, and anyone is welcome to leave produce or take produce. Thanks to all those who generously share part of their garden bounty and to Jud and Gen Smith for hosting the Sharing Cart.

Brimfest

The annual Brimfest is the largest event in our community, giving citizens a good opportunity to gather and meet new friends. Held Sept. 27 and 28 this year, the event features a parade, vendors, food trucks, music, entertainment, children’s activities, fireworks and more. It is a fact that festivals promote diversity, bring neighbors together, offer opportunities for civic pride, and generally make our town a better place to live.

Speaking of making our town better, the town hall and fire station project is FINALLY done and ready to open their doors to welcome visitors immediately after the Brimfest parade. Tours of the fire station will last until noon, and Town Hall will be open for tours until 1 p.m. Be sure to stop by and check out the new facility.

Celebrate Portage!

Leaders from around the county will soon be gathering to recognize and celebrate people and businesses who have made a positive impact on the lives of those who live in Portage County. I was so pleased to see four nominees who are from our Field community. They included Bernadette Moore for Community Hero, Michael Hlad and Dave Rufener for Employee of the Year, and the Craft Meadery for Community Improvement.

Community members are invited to attend the dinner and awards ceremony from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 26 at the NEW Center at NEOMED, 4211 State Route 44, Rootstown. Tickets are available online here.

Around Brimfield and Beyond

I have not had the opportunity to visit the Rootstown Bakery on state Route 44 yet, but it is on my “To Do” list. From what I can see on Facebook, it appears that it has gotten off to a great start, and the reviews have been glowing. Sounds like a sweet trip right down the road.

Within the past couple months, we have discovered an amazing new restaurant, Square Scullery, which opened in January at 778 N. Main St. in Akron. From its décor to the amazing food and friendly service, it has become one of our favorites.

The décor has been described as “trendy eclectic grandma with a touch of inappropriateness.” I describe it as totally fun! Imagine pink glitter walls, whimsical portraits of Snoop Dogg, Martha Stewart and the Golden Girls surrounded by lush flora and fauna with ceiling fixtures to match, mirrored disco balls, and a chef’s dining room with a large window that opens into the kitchen and invites guests to watch as the creative chefs perform their magic. Also featured are hanging lamp shade light fixtures; bright, flowered, velvety booth benches; and elegant crystal lighting.

The upscale food is served on vintage fine china. Corn ribs are one of their most popular dishes, and while they are listed as an appetizer, everyone agrees that they could be a meal. The menu offers a “chef’s surprise,” wherein you tell the server of any dietary issues, foods you like and don’t like, and with that information, the chef prepares a custom meal specifically for you. All desserts are made in-house and are as beautiful as they are delicious. We hosted a party of 21 there a couple weeks ago, and there was not one disappointed guest.

The Square Scullery is open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 4-10 p.m. Saturdays. Walk-ins are welcomed, but reservations are recommended for weekends! Phone 234-334-4446.
